If you frequently suffer from migraines, you’re no doubt searching for ways to relieve your discomfort. One important step to take is to identify and address any factors that might be contributing to your pain. In some cases, this could include the presence of a TMJ disorder! Research shows that a dysfunction of your jaw joints can sometimes be linked to chronic migraines; here’s a closer look at what you need to know about this relationship.

How are TMJ Disorder and Migraines Connected?

The term “TMJ disorder” can refer to a variety of issues with the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) that connect the lower jaw to the rest of your skull. The condition is typically the result of the TMJs being overworked or injured in some way. On its own, it can cause jaw pain, difficulty opening and closing the mouth, and other unpleasant symptoms.

So how can TMJ disorder be connected to migraines? One study from Brazilian researchers found that people with chronic migraines (as characterized by suffering from migraine attacks on at least 15 days during a single month) are three times more likely to have severe TMJ disorder symptoms. This points to a possible relationship between the two issues.

Could TMJ Disorder Be Causing Your Migraines?

There is no evidence that TMJ disorder directly causes migraines. However, the conditions could be connected to each other via the nociceptors, which are nerve endings responsible for sending pain signals to the brain. TMJ disorder can provide constant input to the nociceptors, which could have the side effect of triggering migraines or making them more severe.

What Can You Do About TMJ Disorder and Migraines?

If your TMJ disorder is contributing to your chronic migraines, treating it could go a long way toward helping you find relief. Oftentimes, a TMJ disorder can be addressed with an occlusal splint. This oral appliance can keep the jaw in a more relaxed position, thus giving your TMJs a chance to rest and heal. Another treatment option is equilibration, which is when slight adjustments are made to your teeth, thus improving your bite and reducing pressure on your jaw joints.

Additionally, you should speak to your regular physician about your options for managing and treating your migraines. This often involves using certain medications or avoiding specific foods.

Chronic migraines and TMJ disorders can both be very painful, but luckily, there are ways to get them under control. If you’re proactive in seeking out the care you need, it won’t be too long before you’re able to find relief.
